{whisper a prayer} for your teen

hands
Dear God,

  • “Remove any trace of a veil from _________’s eyes.  Take the blinders off of his/her mind–wherever he/she is prone to unbelief–so that he/she might understand the gospel and see the light of your glory.”  Amen  (2 Corin. 4:3-6)
  • “Bring my teenager back to the faith that he/she knew as a child.  Let our mouths be filled with laughter, and our tongues with songs of joy.  Let our friends and neighbors know that you have done great things for our family.”  Amen    (Psalm 126:1-2)
  • “Help our family to understand what it means to call the Sabbath a delight and to make it an honorable day.  Show us how to find our joy in you rather than in doing whatever we please.”  Amen   (Isaiah 58:13-14)

braces {whisper a prayer}

braces {not what he wants}

today, nick (my 14 yr. old son), gets his braces put on.

to say the least, this is NOT what he wants.

it’s hard to convince our children of things they “need” even though it’s not what they “want”.

hard to convince them that they “will appreciate it later in life”.

i remember when i got my braces put on.  i don’t remember hating it.  i just suffered through, like everyone else.

knowing that today starts a process that will last at least a year, i pray he adjusts quickly & doesn’t feel self-conscious about them.  it’s hard enough being a teen, nowadays, let alone if you feel you stand out from the crowd.

  • Dear God, “Bring your peace to Nick’s heart because a heart at peace gives life to the body.”  Amen  (Proverbs 14:30)

{whisper a prayer} for your teen

  • Dear God, “Don’t let __________give up meeting together with other believers, even if some of her (his) friends quit going to church or to youth group.  Instead, help me to encourage her (him)–and help her (him), in turn, to encourage others–as we look forward to your return.”  Amen  (Hebrews 10:25)

  • Dear God, “Allow ___________ to be rooted and established in love.  Give him (her) power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep your love is.  Let him (her) know this love that surpasses all understanding, that he (she) my be completely filled with your grace.”  Amen  (Ephesians 3:18-19)

  • Dear God, “Teach __________ to fear you and worship you and listen to your voice.  Do not let him (her) rebel against your commands, but cause him (her) to follow you, so that all will be well in his (her) life.”  Amen  (1 Samuel 12:14)

i love using these books that use the scriptures as prayers.  it is a great way to see how the Bible applies to OUR daily lives.  we know that the Bible speaks truth.  promises that we can claim because they are the words of Christ. quick little prayers that we can use as examples when praying for our teens.

our children {whisper a prayer}

Dear Lord,

  • “I pray that my son will not be conformed to this world, but that he will be transformed by the renewing of his mind, that he may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”  Romans 12:2
  • “I pray that my son will cleanse his way by taking heed according to Your word, God.”  Psalm 119:9
  • “I pray that my son will watch and that he will stand fast in the faith and that he will be brave and strong.”  1 Corinthians 16:13
  • “I pray that my son knows You, God, are able to keep him from stumbling, and to present him faultless before the presence of Your glory with exceeding joy.”  Jude 24

prayers for our nation {whisper a prayer}

  • “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.  For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.  Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.”   Romans 13:1,7
“Lord, We live in a nation that is free to elect those chosen for public office.  We confess that the servants who are chosen are there with Your approval.  Let us faithfully support those elected to office, giving honor to their position.  Let us help them fulfill the obligation and responsibility for our nation.  With prayer and understanding, let us unite ourselves to the one purpose of living a life which “In God We Trust”.”

staci {whisper a prayer}

good morning (afternoon) to you!  hope everyone had a fantastic labor day!  we did!  a day of family/food/fun.  bought ladderball.  (ever tried it?)  it’s a great backyard game for all ages.  had our own tournament.  my dad was the only one to endure the entire thing, and beat us all.  it was a lot of fun!!!!

you may remember last week, i asked you to pray for my friend staci.  she has breast cancer and had her first dose of chemo last thursday.  we’ve been praying and waiting to hear how it went.

i received this update this morning:

Dear family & friends:

Staci had her first round of chemo along with a slight case of a sinus infection. Because of the sinus infection, they had to give her some type of extra medicine with her chemo and then give her an antibiotic. She had the chemo early afternoon Thursday and by the evening she was very sick and vomiting. This lasted most of the night and through Friday. She had to go back Friday afternoon to get the shot that goes to her bones to help keep the bone marrow counts up and help with infection. Since she was still getting sick, they prescribed yet another nausea medicine and by Friday evening, she was able to at least rest better. She has not been able to eat since Thursday morning and they are encouraging her to try to make herself eat. They said that with this shot they give her that for the next 2 or 3 days her bones and body will ache.

Everyday her mailbox has been full of cards and this is great. She enjoys reading them. Thank you all for sending her those cards. I enjoy seeing a smile on her face when she reads the funny ones. She just can’t believe when she opens the cards of all that have rememberd her.

A friend, Betsy Askins, sent books for the kids to read about “mommy having cancer”. I had the opportunity to sit with Kylie and Mason tonight and read one of them. When we read about mommy having cancer and having an operation, Kylie would say “that’s just like mommy”. But when we read the part about mommy going “bald”, she was not real sure of that. She wanted to know if we could go out tomorrow and buy mommy a wig so she wouldn’t look like a man. Pray that when Staci does lose her hair that Kylie will be able to handle this. She was pretty quiet after we talked about that so I know it’s laying heavy on her mind. Of course Mason said “me shave my head too”. Kylie said, “not me!”. Staci went to run her hand through her hair and already her hair started to come out a little. This is all happening way too fast.

As always – I ask you to continue to pray for Staci, Chad, Kylie and Mason. I appreciate the cards that have come in that are for Chad also. If any of you are “caregivers” you understand that usually all the attention goes to the one that is sick, not the one that is taking care of them and doing everything so I truly appreciate that you have included Chad on the cards.

Also, please remember my mother, Jeanette Bowers and mother-in-law, Dee Buchanan. This is very hard on them with Staci being their granddaughter and that they can’t be with her either.

In Christ’s love, Ann Buchanan

 As you go about your daily routine, maybe you could whisper a prayer or two for Staci and her family.  (thank you)

  • Dear God, When Staci is confronted with grief, uncertainty, fear, or pressure, remind her of your promise in Isaiah 41:10:  “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  Amen
  • Dear Lord, You are Staci’s rock and her strength.  When she grows weary, let her turn her thoughts and her prayers to You.  When she is discouraged, restore her faith in You.  Let her always trust in Your promises, Lord, and let her draw strength from those promises and from Your unending love.  Amen

“My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.”  Psalm 73:26

what i need to hear {whisper a prayer}

You saw me before I was born.
    Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
    before a single day had passed.
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
    They cannot be numbered!
I cant even count them;
    they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
    you are still with me!

Psalm 139:16–18

isn’t it awesome that God knows what you need to hear and finds ways to reveal Himself to us?  the verse above was in my inbox today…..just what i needed to hear.

my heart has been burdened for my friend Staci….her family has gone to our church for many many many years….i used to babysit for her and her brother when i was a teen.  i lost contact with Staci.  she grew up.  got married.  has 2 beautiful kids. moved away.  her parents and extended family still live here and go to our church.

Staci has breast cancer.  today she starts her chemo.  i pray that God gives her strength beyond comprehension and a peace that only He can give.

there has been a facebook group started for staci, so that those that love her can keep up-to-date on her status.  the following was the most recent update:

As you know, Staci had a double mastectomy on July 2nd because of breast cancer. We met with the oncologist this morning, Thursday, August 14th to see where she goes from here.

She was diagnosed with “HER 2 Positive” cancer. This is a very aggresive cancer and by the time it shows up on scans, it most generally is too late to treat. Because of this, starting on August 28th, she will have a very strong chemo called Cytoxan and Adrianycin every other Thursday for 8 weeks. The day after the chemo treatment, she will have an injection that will go directly to her bones to help fight infection and to keep her bonemarrow counts up. She will lose her hair around 16 days after the first chemo treatment. She will be nauseated and around the 7th or 8th day after her chemo treatment, she will probably be so weak that it would be hard for her to even brush her teeth.

After those 8 weeks, for the next 12 weeks, one day each week -she will have another type of chemo treatment called taxotere. It is not as severe as the first 8 weeks. But she still may have some of the same side effects as the first 8 weeks.

After those 12 weeks, every week – one day a week for a full year, she will have a drug administered just like the chemo is administered called Herceptin. This may go from one full year to two years but they won’t know until then. She will not lose her hair or get sick from this but the problem is that it could make her heart become weak. It also can cause congestive heart failure. They will have to monitor her heart every week for this.

Of course, this was not what we were hoping to hear and they were quite frank with us about the seriousness of this type of cancer. Without this treatment and because of her young age, the cancer would definitely come back. But with all this treatment, she has an 80 – 90% chance that it will not.

Staci teaches down syndrum, autistic and severe behavior children at her school. She wants to try to teach during this as much as possible but she is also concerned about the stress this will put on her students because of the inconsistency of her not being there all the time.

Prayer requests:
1) That God will give Staci’s body strength through all of this and that Staci will know when she must sit back and take it easy.
2) For her husband, Chad and children Kylie and Mason – pray that her children will not be scared when they see their momma without hair and when she is weak. Chad is tired and weary and scared – pray that God will also give him the strength and encouragement that he will need to get through this.
3) That our family will have wisdom on how to handle all of this and how to care for Staci.
4) And most of all – that our Faith will grow stronger each day because we know that God has a greater plan for Staci.

if you have time today and feel so inclined, maybe you could whisper a prayer for Staci and her family.

  • Dear Lord, Help Staci feel Your presence in every situation and every circumstance.  You are with her, dear Lord, in times of celebration and in times of sorrow.  You are with her when she is strong and when she is weak.  You never leave Staci’s side even when it seems to her that You are far away.  Today and every day, God, let Staci feel You and acknowledge Your presence so that others, too, might know You through her.”  Amen

happy 14th nick!

this is my absolute favorite picture of nick.   such a cutie pie.   my baby is 14 today.  he is developing into quite the young man.  happy birthday, nick!  we love you!!  God has blessed our family with you & we are thankful for your life.

  • Dear God,  “Let Nick dwell in the shelter of the Most High and rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  Be his refuge, his fortress, his covering, his shield. Do not let him fear the terror of the night, nor any type of plague or sickness.  Do not let any harm or disaster come near Nick.  Command your angels to guard him in all his ways and keep him from hurting himself.  When he calls on you, answer him.  Be with hiim in trouble; deliver him and honor him.  Satisfy Nick with long life and show him your salvation.”  Amen    (Psalm 91)

whisper a prayer

Dear Lord,

I am Your creation, and You created me for a reason.  Give me the wisdom to follow Your direction for my life’s journey.  Let me do Your work here on earth by seeking Your will and living it, knowing that when I trust in You, Father, I am eternally blessed.

Amen

Romans 12:2
