i was reminded recently of how God has been working in the lives of our family.  sometimes, we get so caught up in the day-to-day battles and current needs & requests, that we forget where we have come from.  we forget the answered prayers.  we forget that God has been more than faithful in our lives.

our recent reminder came in the form of journals.

our son, Nick, (now almost 14), has asthma & allergies, (including a severe peanut allergy).

Nick was diagnosed around 1 year of age, after a scary trip to the ER.  in the days, weeks, months, years that followed, we kept journals of his medicine doses.  (this may sound crazy, but when medicines/times/doses start to blend in to one another, it is a great way to keep track of what’s going on).

journal after journal, we kept track.  some days only contain one or two entries.  other days, the medicines seemed to never end.

some of the days, (and especially nights), seemed to go on forever.  the sound of your child restless, coughing, wheezing, struggling to take catch his breath.  those nights, we found ourselves crying out to God.  pleading with Him to heal our son, to give this struggle to us, his parents, not him.

yet, that’s not what God chose to do.  God heard our cry.  He chose to answer our prayers simply by carrying us through them.

no.  he didn’t completely heal our son.  he still has asthma & allergies.  yes, he had to endure months of allergy shots, allergy tests, daily medicine, but our God traveled these roads with us…and He continues to walk with us today.  things are much better today.  nick’s body is strong.  there are many worse things that people deal with and through this God has never left us.

no one can fully understand why God chooses to do certain things in our lives, but we trust that God knows what is best.

these are some verses that i claimed during this time.  favorite verses that still bring me comfort.

  • James 1:2-5  “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
  • I Peter 5:10  “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you & make you strong, firm & steadfast.”
  • Isaiah 43:1-2 “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

  1. I just wanted to tell you I’m so touched by this post because 1) I’m a mom 2) I have moderate allergies, which are a big pain in life. People who don’t deal with these issues have no clue how hard it is, and I’m here to tell you how much I admire your devotion to your son and the Lord. Your faithfulness in the midst of a long trial blesses me. I just dont know what else to say, except blessings on you.

  2. Krista,
It is of great joy you remind me in this time of how our Father has been completely faithful in our families lives! Even though he doesn’t fully heal (take away the allergies – I SO understand this as I deal with asthma & allergies, and so does my youngest son) we have to remain faithful & trust that He does know best. It’s wonderful to be reminded in such a time that I’m in now with my son fighting a virus … understanding fully that God is watching over him!

Continuing to ask for wisdom every day, HL

  3. Hey there, very inspiring post. It touches me seeing how you keep journals of Nick’s meds. My daughter, her prayers are usually : “Dear Lord….. please take away my peanut allergy, I don’t want it…..” Yeah, keep the faith up, even if He does not “take it away” He will keep us safe.
Found one more thing we have in common – also a coffee junkie here!!!
