hiding God’s word in my heart

ok.  well, between leading a youth small group and now attending a women’s Bible study, i am really working on verse memorization.  not my strong-point, but something that i know i need to do.  so, i thought if i posted it in my blog, maybe that would encourage others to ‘hide God’s word in YOUR heart’ also.

here we go.

1 John 5:13  “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

Psalm 119:11  “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Proverbs 1:7  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

using grandma’s tea cups

cup-blog.jpg
i’ve had these tea cups for a few years, hidden away in the cupboard, never really knowing what to do with them.  my grandmother loved tea.  often you would find a tea bag on the end-table beside her favorite chair or you would see her tea cup storing a used tea bag, saving it for the next cup.  the cups are so beautiful, i have always been afraid to use them for drinking, for fear that i might chip them or break them. while cleaning my bedroom this weekend, i realized that i could place my everyday jewelry in and around them–finally a way to bring them out from the cupboards!!   it’s a practical, yet girly way to remember my grandma every time i look at her tea cups.

whisper a prayer

  • “Let __________ use her (his) gifts and talents for your glory.”  Amen  (1 Corinthians 10:31)
  • “Surround _________ with friends who will sharpen her (him) as iron sharpens iron.”  Amen  (Proverbs 27:17)
  • “Cause ___________ to look carefully how she (he) walks, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of her (his) time and understanding your will.”  Amen  (Ephesians 5:15-17)

taking a drive

trees-blog.jpg the weather this weekend was simply beautiful.  it was a bit warmer than usual fall weather, but it was wonderful.  so, being the goofy mom that i am, i suggested picking up our favorite coffee & fast food supper and we took a family drive.

(even the dog came along.)

i had planned on taking many pictures of the changing leaves, but as you can see, i am a bit ahead of the season….

the leaves aren’t quite changed yet.

goose-blog.jpg  while driving along, we came across some farmland and all of these animals were just as happy as can be…all together.
2-geese-blog.jpg  are they not the cutest?  they just sat there cuddling.  just the two of them.
horse-blog.jpg  i am sooo not a horse person, but who can’t appreciate the beauty of God’s creation?
horse-2-blog.jpg  now, if i had to choose a horse, i would choose one that stands out….like this one

Colossians 1:16  “For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”

whisper a prayer

  • “Put people in _________’s life who will gently instruct her (him); and grant her (him) repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.  Cause ______ to come to her (his) senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken her (him) captive to do his will.”   Amen  (2 Timothy 2:25-26)
  • “I pray that __________, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses all understanding, that _________ may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”  Amen  (Ephesians 3:18-19)
  • “Thank you for loving __________ so much that you gave your one and only Son, that when _________ believes in him she (he) will not perish but have eternal life.”  Amen  (John 3:16)

cute & quick

mverse-blog.jpg
with fall upon us, a new year of youth group begins.  this year, i & another lady, are leading the girls’ middle school small group.  i tried to think of a way that would make verse memorization convenient and interesting.  while wandering the office supplies aisle at Walmart, i came across some index cards that come with a key ring already attached, and they are perforated down the middle……my creative juices started flowing and i came up with this quick idea.

simply purchase the pack of index cards (perforated, hole-punched and key-ringed) and packs of extra keyrings

tear in half

then place them in piles of 30 (per girl)

attach the key ring

i also made a front and back cover, using cardstock that is cut slightly larger than the index cards.  this is where you can be creative.  i picked some favorite patterned paper and with my quickutz, cut out my initial.  you could do whatever you want.

ribbon was added for added ‘cuteness’

these came out so well!  the girls can stick them in their purse or backpacks, attach them to zippers whatever they want!  they are small enough to take them anywhere.  each week, they can write down their memory verse inside it and almost like flashcards, they will have them right there in one area, ready to learn! (and the possibilities are endless–you could use these for so many different things!!)

  • Psalm 119:11  “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
  • Psalm 119:105  “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
  • James 1:22  “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.”

whisper a prayer

  • “Let ________ lie down and sleep in peace.”  Amen  (Psalm 4:8)
  • “Let _________ take refuge in you and be glad; let him (her) ever sing for joy.  Spread your protection over ________ that he (she) may rejoice in you.”  Amen   (Psalm 5:11)
  • “Give _______ victory and be her (his) shield.  Guard her (his) course and protect her (his) way.”  Amen  (Proverbs 2:7-8)

a sickday, a sleepy dog, & some sweet treats

noodle-soup-blog.jpgdog-blog.jpgcoffee-blog91.jpgcinnamon-blog1.jpg

the day started out as any other school day…especially in our house…nick didn’t feel good.  now, if there’s one thing that frustrates me, as a mom, it’s the whole decision over whether a child is ‘ill enough’ to stay home from school.  as his father before him, nick would choose to stay home from school every single day, if given the opportunity, so a typical school morning often includes a list of symptoms, (a.k.a., reasons to stay home).  eeks.  it’s only day # 8 of the school-year and it’s started already.

aaannnyyways, after a lengthy debate, he stayed home.so, i quickly changed gears in my head, (as moms can do so well)…instead of a day filled with running errands and meeting my mom for lunch…i took my pajama butt (sorry if that word offends you), back to bed–well, at least the couch.

once we finally awoke from our sleeping stupor, (amidst the many phone calls), (the same phone that never rings when i am up early)…..the sickie requested chicken noodle soup.  now, i do make great homemade chicken & noodles, but that’s not what we are talking about here.  simply a can of Meijer, chicken & noodle soup.  he loves it. after that little get-well lunch, i remembered that i had bought a package of Pillsbury Cinnamon Twists.…bless that little pudge-bellied Pillsbury doll…..so, i popped those into the oven, for an after lunch treat.  of course, with some delicious, ooey, gooey sweets you must have some hot coffee.  i thought it would be a great day to try a new flavor.  (+ i needed a little pick-me-up)  (rainy day, no make-up, lounge clothes.  you know the feeling girls, you need something to make you feel alive–so i turn to the usual–a cup’a caffeine) so anyways, i remembered that a new box of Gevalia French Vanilla coffee had been delivered a while back, and was hiding in the freezer, so i pulled it out in hopes that it would do the trick. without disappointment, it was delicious  (for you coffee lovers, you understand, even the smell of it brewing, the rich coffee aroma drifting around and my spirits are lifted).

now, the day wasn’t what i had planned on my ‘to-do list’, but i think that God often uses little things like this to speak to us, to slow us down so that we actually hear Him speaking.  yesterday, He reminded me that i have neglected my time with Him this summer.  (mental note: place Him first on my daily to-do’s)

i do appreciate days like this.  days that i am made to slow down.  i am content.  God has blessed me with the gift of being a stay-at-home mom, a comfortable home, a son, a hardworking husband.  and a God that never ignores me, even when i seem to have forgotten Him.
